Originally famous as the site of the very first train robbery in Texas, the town of Allen is definitely in the process of coming into its own. With great schools and great homes available, there is plenty of room for growth and home improvement, especially since Allen is a terrific place for families. In fact, it frequently shows up on lists like: Best Towns for Families (Family Circle), Best Places to Live (Money), Best Places to Move (Forbes), Best Cities for First-Time Home Buyers (WalletHub), and Best Suburbs (D Magazine).
Allen was a small town of a few hundred residents when it was incorporated in 1953. Since this time, it has grown dramatically due to the construction off of U.S. Route 75, the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and the development of nearby metropolitan areas, including Dallas and Plano. In fact, it has doubled or even tripled in size every decade since 1960; the town is now quickly closing in on 100,000 residents.
Large numbers of Americans have heard of Allen as the hometown of Olympic gold medal gymnast Carly Patterson. Most Texans know it extremely well as a recent powerhouse of high school football, their team having won the top-tier state championship several times in the last few years, as three current NFL players are veterans of these Allen high teams. The city celebrated this fact by constructing a $60 million showcase football stadium in the center of town.
Allen boasts scads of developed park land, over fifty miles of hiking and nature trails such as Allen Station Park, and a huge state-of-the-art outdoor BMX/skate park. In addition, the city sponsors the Rodenbaugh Natatorium, a 7,000 square foot indoor/outdoor swimming pool, and the Joe Farmer Rec Center. Allen is a great place to grow and stay healthy!
Shopaholics can spend lots of time and money at the Allen Premium Outlets center, The Village at Allen, or the picturesque Watters Creek Mall.
Allen is an up-and-comer as a host for meetings and conventions, having several large hotels with such facilities, and at least three major venues currently under construction. It is also the home of the Allen Event Center, which hosts three professional sports teams, the indoor soccer Sidekicks (MASL), the indoor football Texas Revolution, and the ECHL’s champion hockey team the Allen The Allen Americans, a “farm” team of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. The city owns several fine golf courses, where city residents can play at a discount.
