The City of The Colony, Texas. The somewhat odd name of this metropolis springs from Texas history: the area north of Dallas was a project of The Texas Emigration and Land Company of Louisville, Kentucky, which was more informally referred to as “Peters Colony,” named after a principal in the company, William S. Peters. They were empowered by the new government of The Republic of Texas to recruit settlers from the United States to inhabit this area. Immigrants were given 640 acres of land to cultivate in exchange for building homes, cultivating at least 15 acres and “pledging allegiance to the Republic of Texas.”
A number of small towns were founded in the area and languished over the following century, but when the Corps of Engineers built Lewisville Lake folks were drawn to build on its shores. Then in 1973, the venerable home building company Fox & Jacobs developed 2,500 acres and named it The Colony to recall the local history. The 3,500 inhabitants of 1978 voted to incorporate, and in 1987 nearby Eastvale joined in as part of The City of The Colony. Since then the population has swelled to around 40,000 and development is in full swing. Texas Hardwood Flooring is a part of that development, offering the finest in hardwood flooring installation and refinishing to this fine community.
Positioning itself as a convention destination, all the major hoteliers have established a presence in The Colony. Especially notable is The Tribute Golf Links and Guest House, a venue that is sure to thrill even the most jaded business traveler. In addition, the Cascades Conference Center, combining elegance, flexibility and creativity, offers a venue ideal for a memorable event, whether it is a wedding or a trade show.
One particular development of note is the recent acquisition of the Nebraska Furniture Mart of Texas, which will anchor “Grandscape,” a 433 acre development that features TopGolf, Scheels sporting goods store and Galaxy movies theatres. This area is expected to attract over six million visitors a year! In addition to retail, dining, attractions and entertainment, Grandscape will soon “feature a convention center hotel and spa, outdoor amphitheater and much more.”
As a place to live, The Colony is unsurpassed. With 28 parks, the city offers playgrounds, game courts, jogging/hiking trails, golf courses, disc golf courses and both indoor and outdoor soccer fields. There are fishing, waterskiing, boating and camping opportunities on Lewisville Lake as well. The Colony is proud to have been designated as both a Tree City USA and a Playful City USA. There are many lovely homes on beautiful tree-lined streets, and the city is conveniently located close to downtown Dallas and DFW Airport.
