Southlake, Texas, as its name suggests, is south of a lake; Grapevine Lake, to be exact. This beautiful suburb was incorporated in 1956, a few years following the creation of the lake. Southlake currently has around 30,000 citizens and is considered one of the richest cities in the country for its size. The average home costs nearly $800,000 and is around 4,000 sq. ft. It is a mecca for professional sports personalities in all fields, especially NFL football. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Southlake Carroll High School Dragons are a state-wide football force to be reckoned with, having won the championship eight times. At the heart of Southlake is the 130-acre development known as Southlake Town Square, which has come into being over the last ten years or so. At the center is the Town Hall and the Municipal Court. Surrounding that are three parks, a fountain, the public library, a Hilton hotel, offices, and the Harkins Movie Theater. The Square features almost one hundred stores and boutiques and over twenty-five restaurants.

A few blocks west of the Town Square you will find The Marq, a stupendous event venue that is open but still growing. The outdoor amphitheater opened first, with seating for a thousand patrons. There is a grand ballroom as well as numerous state-of-the-art meeting rooms. There is also a senior center. To come are playgrounds, fitness centers, party rooms, multi-purpose classrooms, indoor and outdoor tracks, and an aquatics area. There is also a catering kitchen and The Marq is gaining a reputation as a noted wedding event site.

Right near the lake to the north is the marvelous Bob Jones Nature Center & Preserve. It was founded to “give people a unique opportunity to explore the Cross Timbers ecosystem,” our local habitat. It is here that one can bird, hike and be taught about this distinctive ecosystem we inhabit.

Rounding out the “family-friendly” nature of Southlake is Miracle Field. This is a beautiful sports facility that is designed for children with special limitations can join in America’s game, baseball. The playing fields are designed to reduce or eradicate barriers to the wheelchair bound or visually impaired child.
