Those of us who have hardwood floors already know why we love them, so we don’t need convincing. Perhaps you chose a trendy gray hardwood to be installed in your home, or maybe you inherited gorgeous chestnut-colored floors when you bought your home. Either way, if you have them, you’re probably sold on them. And why wouldn’t you be? They look amazing, they are easy to clean, they’re great for your home’s resale, and they’re the smarter choice in the long run.
But since not everyone has had as much exposure to the wonder and amazement that is owning a home with hardwood floors, there might be an opportunity here for some education. If you’re still in the school of thought that believes that carpet is just as good as hardwood flooring, then this blog is for you! Hardwood flooring beats carpet every single time and we’re going to talk about all of the reasons why.
Cosmetically More Appealing
This may seem like a tough one to argue with facts; however, there is actual and documented proof that a home with hardwood flooring can have a significantly higher resale value than that of a home with carpeting. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which being that hardwood floors are more pleasing to the eye and they have become a commodity that many people want in their homes.
Able to Get Cleaner
If you’ve read any of our previous blogs about carpet, then you might already be disgusted by carpet. But in case you haven’t, just know that ALL carpet is embedded with some degree of any or all of the following things:
- Dust and Dust Mites
- Chemicals and Toxins
- Other Allergens
So, though it may be possible for some of these things to also be on your wood floor temporarily, they clean up SO much better. Your floors can easily become as good as new with one simple cleaning. Carpet can only get so clean and, because of its absorbent nature, it will hold on to chemicals and bacteria even after repeated vacuuming and scrubbing.
As mentioned above, because carpet can contain a slew of concerning toxins, there is reason to be thinking about the health of your family. Having carpet in the home, especially when the carpet is older, can lead to issues such as asthma, rashes, feet fungus, respiratory illnesses, and other issues. Even when you have taken extra care to keep shoes, pets, and food/drinks off of the carpet, the chemicals used in the production of carpet make it potentially harmful, plus, it’s impossible to keep ALL dust and dust mites from being on and in the carpet. In direct contrast, wood floors are safe, natural, and easy to maintain.
Easy to Clean
As mentioned above, wood floors are so much easier to thoroughly clean than carpeting. This might be cheating because you’ve already read how we believe that carpets never get fully clean; however, it needs to be said. Wood floors are so easily maintained, especially when it comes to messes and spills.
All of the other points have definitely played into this one, but wood floors are so much longer lasting than your carpet. Wood floors take the same beating that carpet does, but it doesn’t take on the same amount of dust, stains, odors, and bacteria that are present in carpet. Because of this, it will last so much longer. When your neighbors are having to replace their plush or shag carpet, you’re going to be thankful that you went with your beautiful, forever gorgeous wood floors. And if, after years or even decades, your wood floors start to show signs of wear, giving them a revamp may be as simple as refinishing them. Your floors, especially if they’re taken care of, can last as long as your home itself. Could you say the same about carpet?
By now, you know our opinions on carpet vs. hardwood floors, and hopefully, you understand the reasons why we believe this so strongly. Because hardwood floors look nicer, clean up better, are safer, and last longer, they are simply the better option.
